What Is Shockwave Therapy?
Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) is a non-surgical, evidence-supported treatment that uses acoustic pulses to stimulate tissue repair in chronically damaged or calcified musculoskeletal structures. It is applied through a specialized applicator pressed against the skin over the target area. The process uses no needles or surgical processes.
The acoustic waves create a microtrauma effect at the cellular level that triggers a renewed healing response: mast cell activation, neovascularization (new blood vessel growth), and collagen matrix remodeling. This is particularly relevant for calcific tendinopathy, chronic enthesopathies, and areas where the tissue has become hypovascular and biologically inert.
At Active Health, focused and radial shockwave parameters are selected based on your diagnosis, tissue depth, and symptom chronicity. The plan is reviewed after each phase to ensure the protocol is producing the intended biological response.
